Upon reading an article in justnews.com about student officers at University of Miami, it made me realize how useful it is to employ student police officers on college campuses. There are numerous reasons as to why student officers are beneficial:
Ø They are a valuable resource because the students know more about the student body and potential problems going around on campus that might go unnoticed
Ø They can easily blend in with the college crowd and could go on undercover operations for the campus police
Ø Students want to feel safe and secure on and around campus, so student officers will undoubtedly want to provide assistance to those in trouble in order to keep the school community the safest environment it can be
Ø For those interested in becoming police officers in the future, this job is a great opportunity to gain real world police experience and train with those in the field for a long time
Ø Lastly, students will be willing to work for little or no pay and will work extra hard, just because they want the experience and to make connections for future employment opportunities
I think it is important that every college campus has some type of program like this implemented that will allow students to work and gain practical policing experience, as well as make a difference within their college community.
